Consistency
Your dog likes routine and will benefit from clear guidance
from you. You can help your dog become a polite pet by
keeping your interactions consistent. For example, if
you allow your dog to jump up on you when you come home
from work, don’t scold him for jumping up on you
when you are dressed for an evening out. Your dog doesn't
know the difference!
Reinforcement
With obedience training, its important to positively reinforce
what your dog has done right, and to let him know when
he’s made a mistake. Praising your dog will build
his confidence and motivate him to repeat good behaviors.
Rewards (treats) will communicate to your
dog that he’s done something right. We’ll
teach you how to use praise and reward to reinforce good
behaviors.
Timing
Dogs have a very short learning window. All reinforcement needs to be given within 2 seconds in order to capitalize on your dog's learning potential. Waiting longer may cause
confusion and be more difficult for dog to associate the cause (action) with the effect (praise or correction). Fox Valley K-9 Training Center LLC will show you ways to capitalize on the positive points of your dogs training. We will show you how to do so with positive reinforcement within half a second of your dogs good behavior.
